IMAGINE IF BLACK MOGULS UNITED: THE Blueprint for black economic power
By Keith J. Leigh
Introduction: Imagine if Black Moguls United
Imagine the force of true Black financial power:
Black Moguls: Russell Simmons, Tyler Perry, Oprah, Steve Stoute, Drake, Top Dawg, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Rick Ross, Suge Knight, Irv Gotti, Kareem โBiggsโ Burke, Earl Graves Sr, John H. Johnson, J. Prince, Damon Dash, Bill Cosby, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, L.A. Reid, Babyface, Beyonce, Matthew Knowles, Michael Jackson, E-40, Prince, Shannon Sharpe, Diddy, Ice Cube, Yo Gotti, Young Dolph, Karl Kani, Daymond John, Nas, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Robert F. Smith, the Cash Money brothers, Ryan Coogler, John Singleton, Sylvia Rhone, Dr. Dre, Bob Johnson (BET), Kobe Bryantโjust to name a few.
Picture all black moguls, sports icons, creatives, and business titans in the same room, putting ego aside, pooling resources, and investing in real infrastructure: sports teams, studios, channels, factories, tech, grocery chains, and global trade partnerships.
That move would create a seismic shift in global power structures.
The Blueprint: What Real Collaboration Looks Like
Black moguls collectively manage more than $30 billion in net worth. United, they could form a holding company or sovereign investment fund powerful enough to acquire sports franchises, launch pan-African media networks, build film studios, purchase cable channels, and fund tech start-ups.
Strategic alliances with Africa, South America, India, and China would position Black America as an economic and cultural force that cannot be sidelined or ignored.
Ownership in Sports & Entertainment:
Black leaders holding seats in NBA and NFL ownership meetings. Black-owned sports networks broadcasting our stories and deals. This vision is not far-fetchedโitโs simply underleveraged.
Media & Content Control:
No more relying on outsiders to tell Black stories. United investments could acquire TV networks, cable channels, film studios, and music catalogs. The culture would set the narrative, standards, and control distribution.
Manufacturing & Retail:
Owning grocery stores, shopping centers, and fashion houses brings jobs and fresh capital into Black neighborhoods. Controlling distribution means controlling the economics.
Tech & Global Trade:
Owning tech companies and manufacturing centers, and trading directly with Africa, South America, India, and China, would multiply Black capital and open new business lanes beyond entertainment.
The Truth: Why It Didnโt HappenโAnd What Went Wrong
Letโs address reality. Whenever Black moguls have moved toward collective power, the narrative changed.
Some faced public takedowns, mysterious deaths, blackmail, or character assassinations. The playbook: divide, isolate, and dismantle the threat.
Too often, the community watched or even celebrated their downfall, rather than defending the power moves.
This apathy, mixed with ego, mistrust, and lack of long-term planning, fractured any chance at unity.
The Cost of Passivity: What Weโre Living With Now
Instead of building a new Black Wall Street, many Black billionaires and millionaires failed to reinvest in the community. Wealth remained siloed, while poverty, incarceration, and economic dependence increased. Now the consequences are everywhere:
- Major media companies rarely represent us truthfully.
- Ownership in sports, tech, and core industries is minimal.
- Community infrastructure suffers while others profit from Black culture, talent, and consumer spending.
